SPANISH

This subject is taught by a specialist teacher for the class teacher PPA time once a week.

Intent

We ensure that all pupils in KS2 have access to a high quality Modern Foreign Language (MFL) curriculum that fosters pupil’s curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world.

We are committed to ensuring that competence in another language enables children to interpret, create and exchange meaning within and across cultures.

The teaching of Spanish provides an appropriate balance of spoken and written language and lays the foundations for all pupils to approach further foreign language teaching at KS3 with confidence.

Implementation

In KS2, each class has a timetabled Spanish lesson of 45 minutes. Lessons support the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing:

  • Children learn through specific topics each term

  • Children are taught to listen attentively to spoken language and respond, joining in with verbal activities, songs, rhymes and games.

  • Children develop an appreciate of a variety of stories, songs, poems and rhymes in Spanish that are delivered through the curriculum content as well as by Spanish speakers
Cross curricular links with computing are provided.

  • We follow the primary MFL scheme of work.

  • The children learn about and celebrate key Spanish cultural events.

Impact

Spanish is assessed through work sampling for each year group and each class - examples of work, photographs, quizzes and feedback show that children are learning more, developing their vocabulary and participating fully in their Spanish lessons.

Pupil voice meetings with children demonstrated that children enjoyed learning through role playing, games, watching videos and playing with the puppets. They all acknowledged the importance of the Spanish lessons. Children in Years 4, 5, and 6 stated that learning Spanish makes them interested in a different country too. When asked how they can tell they are making progress, the children said that they can pronounce words accurately, they remember songs, words and they can speak in short sentences and write without so many spelling mistakes.

During Covid 19, all children accessed MFL lessons which were provided remotely, following presentations and videos. Children submitted work online which demonstrated their interest in and commitment to their learning.

Cultural Capital

Through developing their competence and interest in MFL (Spanish) the children will be able to make a positive contribution to the society within which they live and enable them to be successful in their career and the world of work.

The children will have the opportunity to learn about the language and culture of another country.

As part our MFL curriculum, all pupils will develop fundamental skills (e.g. speaking confidently, present ideas) helping to develop their language and communications skills, understanding of the world and developing their self-confidence, enjoyment and engagement.
